In my fabric pieces I explore the dichotomy between the fragile fabric, the protected but threatened plant species of the native forest, and the transient play of the elements-water, earth, fire. My fabric explores our relationship with this complex natural environment. In particular the shibori process allows me the freedom to explore nuances of pattern and colour.
My work engages the viewer in an emotional and sensory response to the natural forms and colours of the bush from where I draw my inspiration. I am attentive in the dying process to ethical methods of dye preparation and use non-endangered species of lichens and native plant material. From the sea vegetables and indigenous dye plants of the South East Coast of NSW I coax an interesting array of colours which will vary according to seasonal conditions.
