Rockpools

Nuno felted wrap 100% Merino wool and silk
My work reflects the nature in the coastal area environment where I live. Rockpools is a nuno* felted wrap inspired by the wonders of life in rockpools. It incorporates, hand printed silks and merino wool, with some commercially printed silks. It is lightweight but warm.
*Nuno Felting is a wet felting technique developed by fibre artist Polly Stirling where wool or fiber is felted or entangled with and through an open weave fabric such as silk chiffon or silk gauze. The felting is accomplished by applying water, heat and friction to the sheep wool or alpaca fibre.
I bring together a love of the natural world, its colour and texture combining drawing, printing, painting, dyeing, felting and stitch in the works. It investigates the fragility and beauty of nature. My work is often based on what I see, hear and feel and is a visual narrative, a journeying through place recognising the earth is a living entity. I’m also interested in the notion of biophilia which literally means ‘love of life’ and is an area of scientific study that suggests that our tendency to affiliate with nature is inherent and integral to our psychological and physical development and wellbeing.
